15/7/2025 : Important Update for Motorhome Owners Visiting Greece - new Greek Road Traffic Code

Effective date: 1/7/2025

> Release Date & Legal Basis

  • The new Greek Road Traffic Code was published in the Government Gazette on June 13, 2025 as Law 5209/2025 (ΦΕΚ 100/Α/13‑6‑2025).

  • It officially came into effect in early July 2025, with enforcement starting around July 1, 2025, and some digital enforcement systems (e.g., cameras, e‑fines) planned for September 2025 .

🚐 What’s Changed for Motorhomes & Camper Vans

1. Clear legal status for campers

  • For the first time, motorhomes and trailers are explicitly recognized as legal temporary residences under Article 4. They must meet certain equipment and construction standards.

2. Parking vs. camping – separation clarified

  • Parking is now allowed under clearer rules—but camping (sleeping, cooking, awnings, chairs, etc.) remains prohibited in public spaces (forests, beaches, archaeological sites, municipal lots, roadside areas).

  • Enforcement penalizes any camping activity, with €300 fines per person or vehicle, rising up to €3,000, and even jail time for repeat offenses .

3. Parking time limits based on vehicle size & area

  • In urban/residential areas:

    • Vehicles up to 7.5 m long can park indefinitely, as regular cars.

    • Vehicles over 7.5 m (or trailers) may only park up to 24 hours consecutively.

  • Outside residential areas:

    • Parking is allowed without time limits, but only in designated zones or on the roadside, parallel to the road, without obstructing traffic or violating signage.

4. Reason for change

  • These updates follow strong criticism from camper communities. The Hellenic Motorhome Club (ELAT) secured modifications restoring legal clarity and allowing proper parking—leading police not to punish legally parked vehicles.

📝 Enforcement & Penalties

  • €300 fine on the spot for illegal camping or extended parking.

  • Repeat or serious violations can escalate to €3,000 fines and up to 3 months in prison.

✅ Final Takeaway

The new KOK (Law 5209/2025), effective June 13, 2025, restores some flexibility for motorhome users by clarifying where and how long you can park—especially for vehicles under 7.5 m—while keeping wild camping illegal and enforcing stiff penalties for violations.
This framework gives legal clarity and practical parking rights, but camping behavior (sleeping/open-air cooking/setup) remains strictly prohibited.
